March 8 is International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD celebrates historic progress made by women’s liberation movements and acknowledges ongoing and pervasive gender inequality.

This brochure celebrates International Women’s Day to provide some historical context, as well as information pertaining to the 2024 theme of economic empowerment for women and girls.

The gender pay gap continues to limit women and entrench gender inequality. In Australia, women earn $26, 393 less per annum than their male counterparts. Women are underpaid in both male- and female-dominated industries. Additionally, women still do the majority of unpaid labour and childcare, roughly double that of men, and are twice as likely as men to provide unpaid care for elderly relatives or those living with a disability.
