Women’s Health in the South East together with over 100 peak bodies and practitioners supports the joint statement from Australian Women Against Violence Alliance (AWAVA), calling for the end to the Federal Government’s new Family Law Inquiry.

“We applaud the work and advocacy of our colleagues across Australia who recognise the harm this inquiry is doing to survivors and victims of family violence,” says Kit McMahon, CEO of WHISE.

“The alarm that the statement clearly raises and the fact that the inquiry is proceeding against unanimous advice of experts is a major concern.”

A media statement released by the Australian Women Against Violence Alliance (AWAVA) states:

“This Inquiry is not only unnecessary, it is dangerous. We know what is needed to improve the system. The decision to further delay implementing these urgently needed changes is absolutely unconscionable. Women’s and children’s lives are on the line. They cannot wait another year for action.”

A motion to stop the inquiry was narrowly defeated in the Senate on the 15 October, despite more than 1,400 family violence survivors raising their concerns to parliamentarians.
