We are heartbroken.
In response to the horrific events in Bondi last night WHISE sends a message out of solidarity calling on all to stand together with clarity and compassion. We recognise that this horrendous event will be reverberating in our community and across all communities for days, weeks and months to come.
Here in south-eastern Melbourne, we live, work, and play in one of the world’s most diverse communities. Our region is home to one of the largest and most concentrated Jewish populations in Victoria and Australia. This diversity strengthens us. We are neighbours, colleagues, friends. We share schools, parks, businesses, and hopes for our children’s futures.
At WHISE, we work every day alongside communities building a society free from violence in all its forms. We see people who refuse to be divided. We witness those who stand up for others. We know the resilience of communities who choose solidarity over fear.
There is no tolerance for violence of any kind.
All faiths have spoken clearly: hatred has no home here.
To everyone feeling fearful or unsettled today—people of all faiths and backgrounds who live with love in their hearts: your care for one another matters. Please reach out if you need support. Take care of each other.
To our Jewish neighbours: we stand with you. Your vibrant culture enriches our community. Your celebrations bring light and joy. Your safety is our shared responsibility.
Like our partners, members and stakeholders we continue to commit to build communities where everyone deserves and receives respect, safety, and care. Where violence is not tolerated. Where diversity is celebrated. Where collective care and respect guide what we do.
As menorah candles are lit in the coming days, may we remember: light overcomes darkness when we tend it together.
