Local Afghan cultural societies have teamed up to host a night of poetry, music and creative performance, to promote a deeper understanding of gender equality within the Afghan community.

Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE) is proud to be supporting this coalition of cultural societies to raise the profile of gender equality in the wider Afghan community and to showcase our local creative talent, and our male and female gender equality champions.

The Balance for Better evening will advocate for the equal rights of men and women and explore the drivers of violence against women, addressing not only interpersonal relationships but also complex issues of child-rearing and intergenerational conflict.

“By exploring these topics in an entertaining and culturally relevant way, we hope to encourage ongoing discussion within the community on gender equality, and challenge negative stigma around the topic,” says Ms Kit McMahon, CEO WHISE.

“We’ve learned over the years working with the local Afghan community that there is a deep respect for and desire to express complex ideas through music, poetry and creative performance.”
