Let’s Talk Respect

When we talk about respectful relationships, we mean being kind, fair and gentle. At around 2 years of age, children start learning that other people think, feel and experience things differently from themselves. This is when children can develop positive behaviour by being taught that other people’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences are important. We can talk to our children about positive respectful relationships and help them with small actions that show consideration for others. For example, a toddler might see someone who’s upset, feel upset too and want to comfort the other person or fix the problem.

In the long term, societies that have a lot of people who treat each other with respect and dignity are better at breaking down prejudice, overcoming disadvantage, sharing resources, and including everyone. These sorts of societies benefit everyone who lives in them, including your child.

We all want the best for our children and for them to grow and thrive as young people. Talking about kindness, fairness and respect is an important part of making sure our children have strong, healthy relationships with their peers and community. Children are curious and learn in so many different ways.

By not talking about some topics, they’re learning that there are some things we’re not allowed to speak about. It’s important that they have trusted adults in their lives to speak to and there are many culturally and age appropriate resources available to help you have these conversations with your child.
