Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE) acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as Australia’s First Peoples and the Traditional Owners of the lands, waterways and skies where we live, work and play. The staff and Board of WHISE stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples of the Bunurong Lands. We recognise and value the voices, strength and resilience of First Nations women across the Kulin Nation. On Saturday, 14 October, 2023 the question which will be put to Australian voters, will require a Yes or No response to whether an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, which would act as an independent advisory body for First Nations people, should be enshrined in the country’s constitution.  WHISE stands in solidarity with the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and it’s call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution. We offer support of the YES vote in allyship with representatives of First Nations People, who made the initial request through the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

Respect

Promoting respect is at the core of our work at WHISE. We understand that the wider community will be having conversations about this important issue and we encourage you to consider the wellbeing of First Nations people to be your primary focus during this time. We all have the power to ensure racial violence under the guise of political and social debate is not tolerated. When we listen to each other and work together respectfully, we all benefit. WHISE respects and deeply values the importance of listening to the views of all First Nations communities on the Voice and referendum.

Listening

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should have a voice when it comes to decisions that impact them. For too long, successive governments have made decisions for First Nations People rather than with them. First Nations People have made the reasonable request to be listened to about issues that are important to their communities and to propose solutions. A constitutionally protective Voice allows for practical improvements in jobs, health, justice and health. We can have a fairer and better future when First Nations People have a greater say in their future.

Strength and expertise

We can create a future where we respect and value First Nations People and take pride in the oldest living culture in the word. Aboriginal communities have looked after Country since time immemorial and have a valuable role to play in addressing the climate crisis. But for too long governments have refused to hear or take up this advice. Writing YES won’t change everything, but it is a step in the right direction. When we listen to the expertise of First Nations communities, everyone can thrive.
